March 2006
With the snow on the second March, the light came and I was tempted outside. This time of course, straight onto prepared board [Snow towards predannack & Mounts bay from mullion cliff ]; in the past I mostly worked from prepared drawing, indeed that is what my MA dissertation was about. The next few days the light was superb, the sky full of wintry showers and the colours of the vegetation, oranges and reds with deep shadows; I’ve been visiting the sites which I have noted in the past but never translated into paint [Black sheep, Mounts bay and snow showers].
Should I develop any of these into larger canvases? It is pouring with rain now …….
(March 21)
Despite the rain I continued with my little boards [Ogo-Dour cliff in the mist] and [Towards Predannack Wartha] were both painted wholly outside, but the the weather finally beat me and I could only sketch on to the board and complete indoors. Still I don’t think the results are too bad: [Snow shower off Predannack Head], [Predannack Wollas with golden sea] and [Gorse fire smoke].
I’ve also continued to experiment with the boards during our life sessions and I have been interested in fellow artists responses to works that have different fractions of say ‘studio’ finish, that is just responding to the image or to a related drawing, as opposed to working directly from the model. These recent works, again on board, effectively exemplify the spectrum, from [Anne 22 feb] and [Caroline 15 March], almost wholly from the model, [Caroline 22 March] where a quite detailed charcoal drawing on the board has been worked again later, to [Amy drawing transfer] which is just from the drawing.
That is probably it for March as I shall be busy with other things and my next images I hope will include include interiors of Almeria Cathedral
